My new role as cook and nanny started after the birth of my grandson, Max. My wife and I started caring for Max and after his mother returned to work when Max was 4 months old. Every weekday morning, I fix breakfast for Max, his brother, Jonas, and his father. Monday thru Thursday, I cook evening meals for the extended family. Max turned 5 in January 2019, and is now going to an International School where only Spanish is spoken. So I pick him up from school around 4:30 pm during the week. Max’s little brother, Jonas, joined us in August 2017. So it is back to baby bottles and diapers. For the past four or five years, my wife has visited Japan twice a year to spend time with her father who is nearing 95 years of age. When she leaves, my daughter-in-law’s parents come up from San Antonio to help out half days. Taking care of my grandkids has been and continues to be a joy. I guess I missed out when my own kids grew up as my work schedule was so demanding. So living as an extended family has been wonderful even though it can be demanding.
