My new role as cook and nanny started after the birth of my grandson, Max. My wife and I started caring for Max after his mother returned to work when Max was four months old. Max’s little brother, Jonas, joined us in August 2017. When the COVID pandemic hit, my son sold the duplex we shared, and we all moved in together in a large home in central Austin. While my son and his wife work from home, my wife and I take care of the boys, and I cook evening meals during the workweek. For the past four or five years, my wife has visited Japan twice a year to spend time with her father, who passed away a few years ago. Taking care of the grandkids has been and continues to be a joy. I guess I missed out when my own kids grew up, as my work schedule was so demanding. Living as an extended family has been wonderful for me.
