My new role as cook and nanny started after the birth of my grandson, Max. My wife and I agreed to provide daycare for Max and when his mother returned to work when Max was 4 months old. Every weekday morning, I fix breakfast for Max and Monday thru Thursday, I cook evening meals for the extended family. Max will turn 4 this coming January (2018) and is now going to an International School where only Spanish is spoken. So I pick him up from school around 4:30 pm during the week. Max’s little brother, Jonas, joined us in August and is now with us during the week since October. So it is back to baby bottles and diapers. My wife has been doing the most time with Jonas but leaves for her Japan visit just after Christmas. For the past four or five years, she visits Japan twice a year to spend time with her father who is nearing 95 years of age. When she leaves, my daughter-in-law’s parents come up from San Antonio to help out half days. Taking care of my grandkids has been and continues to be a joy. I guess I missed out when my own kids grew up as my work schedule was so demanding. So living as an extended family has been wonderful even though it can be demanding.
