John Sturtevant is my 5th great grandfather and was Josiah Cotton’s father-in-law. He was born in Plymouth on the 6th of September 1658 to Samuel Sturtevant and Ann Lee. Samuel was born in Kent, England and first appeared in Plymouth Court Records in 1643 listed with males between sixteen and sixty able to bear arms. In 1684 John Sturtevant married Hannah (Winslow) Crowe who was fourteen years his senior. At the time, John was twenty-six and Hannah was forty. Hannah was the widow of William Crowe and the daughter of Josiah Winslow, one of five Winslow brothers. When William Crowe died, she inherited his home that eventually passed down to several generations of Cottons. When Hannah died in 1708, John next married Mary (Smith) Haskell in 1711. She died eight years later in 1719. John served most of his life as a selectman for the Plymouth Court and died February 4th, 1752.
